Archive Notes: extraordinary event hosted by the Veneranda Fabbrica's Archives

Now available on video

This past October 14th, the Veneranda Fabbrica's Archives hosted an event that was as unique as it was exceptional. The Cantus Figuratus ensemble of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, directed by Dominique Vellard, performed three motets directly from Franchino Gaffurio's first volume in the evocative and recently renovated "antica sala" of the library, which overlooks the Cathedral's marvellous apse windows. The performance, included in the program for the Codici per Cantare: i Libroni del Duomo nella Milano sforzesca [Codex for Singing: the Volumes of the Duomo di Milano under Sforza rule] study day, allowed audiences to enjoy Gaffurio's music in one of the most authentic ways possible. In fact, the pieces were performed with the singers reading the 14th century notation from the only codex, just meters from the Cathedral for which this very same music had been composed, and therefore creating a striking re-enactment, for the receptive audience, of that which actually happened over five centuries ago under the vaulted ceiling of the soon-to-be-constructed cathedral.
