Historic Archives

The HISTORICAL ARCHIVES hold the documents produced by the Veneranda Fabbrica throughout the course of its various activities: the construction of the Cathedral, the quarrying of marble, the use of the territory, the management of properties and accounts, the furnishing of raw materials, and much more.

The first systematic organisation of this textual heritage began in the mid-18th century. Subsequently, at the beginning of the 1900s, Ettore Verga succeeded in a courageous, far-from-simple attempt to harmonise the organisational structure of the 1700s with more modern archival methodologies.

Today, the historic Archives maintain Verga’s organisation and a century later his inventory still makes up the main starting point to study and research these documents.
