“The artistic and construction history, as it were, of the Duomo of Milan is contained, as we already have seen, more in Registers than in documents. […] The series of registers of the Fabbrica del Duomo, which from 1386 reaches our time, is without a doubt one of the most beautiful and complete archives of public administration ever preserved.” E. Verga
A series of REGISTERS makes up the true heart of the Archives of the Veneranda Fabbrica. Conserved in chronological order and uninterrupted to this day, the registers diligently report all the contributions and donations from the people of Milan for the cathedral’s construction, contracts with the artists and artisans, and payments for projects and for works.
Even the registers, like the historic Archives, were subject to the organisation implemented by Verga. Today, pending completion of the new analytical inventory underway, it is still the main guide for those working with the content.
